On 21-23 March 2025, the meeting of the Ad-Hoc Committee of the Socialist International was held in Tirana on the theme “Progressive Solutions for a Changing World: Harnessing Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Social Networks”. The event brought together representatives from the Socialist International member parties and international experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities brought by rapid technological development in relation to democracy, governance and social inclusion. The discussions were held in the form of a challenges-solutions-conclusions structure, focusing on key topics such as digital inequalities, AI-driven disinformation and the polarizing role of social networks.
The forum produced a series of concrete recommendations aimed at strengthening common progressive approaches to digital challenges. Highlights include the creation of international ethical frameworks for the development of AI, the promotion of digital literacy and technological inclusion, and the development of new strategies for political engagement in the digital age. It also highlighted the importance of harnessing the potential of social media to strengthen civic participation and effectively counter the far-right narratives circulating globally. The committee reaffirmed the role of the Socialist International as a unique platform for cross-border cooperation and the promotion of progressive policies in the international arena.
